What
Kind of Husband Would Jesus Have Made ?
As
the perfect example of manhood, we must look to Jesus
for characteristics of a good husband. He consistently
treated women with respect, courtesy and compassion. The
Bible records many instances of how he interacted with
ladies.
His
Mother
When
Jesus was twelve, his parents found Him teaching in the
temple. “Your father and I have had much sorrow looking
for You,” said Mary. Gently trying to prepare her for
that day when He must leave her, He said, “Do you not
know that I must be in My Father's house?" He then
returned home and obeyed them (Luke 2:49-51). And from
the cross, Jesus entrusted the continuing care of His
beloved mother to John.
Peter's
Mother-In-Law
Jesus
“went and took her by the hand and raised her up. At once
her sickness was gone” (Mark 1:31). After her healing,
she got up and cared for them. Women touched by Jesus
become wonderful ministers. In what ways do you lift up
your wife?
The
Woman Who Anointed Jesus
When
men protested her ministry, Jesus defended her. “Let her
alone. Why are you giving her trouble?” He asked (Mark
14:6). If your wife were harassed, would you stand up
for her?
Jairus'
Daughter
Even
to the young women, Jesus' manner is consistently loving.
To this deceased girl, Jesus said, “Little lamb, arise”
(Mark 5:41) and then requests that something be given
her to eat. What a tender picture of provision. How have
you provided for the needs of your wife and children?
Mary
of Bethany
Martha
objected as Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened
(Luke 10:41-42). With a tone of patient affection, Jesus
said, “Mary has chosen the good thing. It will not be
taken away from her." It is essential that a man
allow his wife to sit at Jesus' feet.
The
Woman Caught in Adultery
Jesus
asked, “Woman, where are those who spoke against you?”
(John 8:10). Jesus desires fair treatment for all women.
Few things are more destructive to a marriage than damning
accusations. Have you accused your spouse lately?
The
Woman Who Touched
Jesus
said, “Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace”
(Luke 8:48). We must speak words of consolation and comfort
to our wives.
Mary
Magdalene
She
was the first person to see the risen Savior. As she stood
outside the tomb, Jesus asked her, “Woman, why are you
crying? Who are you looking for?” (John 20:15). What is
your reaction to the tears of your wife?
The
Woman of Samaria
Jesus
said, “If you knew who I was, you would ask Me for a drink”
(John 4:10). Men should encourage their wives to ask Jesus
for His “living water.” Are you leading your wife to worship
the Lord Jesus Christ?
Jesus
always ministered to women with love, tenderness and instruction
tempered with mercy. He still treats women the same today.
His selfless pattern of behavior challenges husbands to
examine their interaction with women in general and their
wives in particular.
